Post-therapy considerations?
Focused shockwave therapy works by initiating your body's healing cascade. It's best to let this process occur uninterrupted. Patients may be advised to avoid or minimize the use of pain medications and anti-inflammatories post-therapy. Reducing the load on the healing area is advisable, especially in the early stages of healing. Most patients show improvement after the first or second session, with significant progress expected by the fourth session.
Is Focused Shockwave right for you?
Focused shockwave therapy is perfect for healing chronic injuries, particularly injuries that have failed to respond to conventional modalities. As it initiates your body's natural healing process and is effective for many conditions including chronic tendinopathies, shoulder, hip, knee, and spinal injuries. During your evaluation at our office, we can determine if this exciting new therapy is right for you.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a cutting-edge treatment that uses acoustic shockwaves to speed up healing. It breaks up soft tissue calcifications, enhances collagen synthesis, releases growth factors, induces neoangeogenesis/stem cell activity, and stimulates your body's healing process to stop pain and shorten recovery time.
How does it heal?
A shockwave is a high-energy wave that travels faster than the speed of sound. Intense energy is transmitted through shockwaves, a commonly known example is a “sonic boom” associated with jets breaking the sound barrier. During therapy, an acoustic shockwave is directed at the targeted tissue, creating a pressure front followed by small cavitation bubbles. As these bubbles collapse, they exert an intense mechanical impact on the tissue. The body perceives this impact as an injury even though no injury is occurring. This leads to a cascade of reactions which initiates/accelerates healing.
Radial or Focused?
There are two types of shockwaves used in physical medicine: radial and focused.
Radial shockwaves waves cover a broader area but peak energy is more superficial. Focused shockwaves can pinpoint their peak energy to a “focused” target. This enables focused shockwaves to penetrate deeper, reaching lower layers tissues and joints that are less treatable for radial waves. Our office offers focused shockwave therapy for its pinpoint precision.
